Every writing wall should:
- be labeled as writing or have a Get Ahead Writing logo
- have a space for each student in the class
- have the Common Core State Standards Instructional Sequence posted
- display the elements of the Instructional Sequence (prompt, plan, modeled writing, student writing)
- show the Scoring Guide that is being used (if applicable)
- have standards-based comments on the student writing
- have work posted that is dated within a month
- have work posted that is labeled "rough draft" if it is not a final product
Please note: Before teachers begin actively using a Scoring Guide, students need to be creating products. First we have to have a product, and then we can make the product better. In some cases in early Kindergarten, you will not see the Scoring Guide being used.
Also, some teachers will post only the portion of the Scoring Guide that they are working on at the time. In this case, the Scoring Guide is usually made on a poster.
There will be variations in what you see, but the key elements of an effective writing wall should be evident.
Mrs. Martinez created this amazing writing wall in her Kindergarten classroom!
Mrs. Galarza's 4th grade writing wall
The two photos above were taken in Ms. Eskridge's classroom (1st grade teacher)
Writing Walls have two purposes:
#1- Demonstrate Evidence of Instruction
#2- Demonstrate Evidence of Student Growth
